End-of-the-Year Meeting

Hello All You Photographers, 

We're headed down the homestretch for our 2016-2017 BSCC season. June 6th will be our last meeting.

Please note the change of date:

Tuesday, June 6th at 6:30 p.m. (note earlier time, too) will be our end of the year pot-luck and final slide show. The Power Point will include all the photos entered during the 2016-2017 season and promises to display the many talents of our members. We'll have an opportunity to share a meal and chat with club and community members. We'll also hold our End-of-the-Year business meeting, all are welcome to attend. On the agenda, choosing next year's select topics for competition, discussing possible presentations for November, January and March meetings, and divvying up club responsibilities with the idea of using many hands to make the 2017-2018 work.

Bring a dish to pass, beverages and utensils will be provided.

Please come, join us for an evening of community.

The Berrien Springs Camera Club had their final judging for the 2016-2017 season. The meeting held a relaxed and fun atmosphere as the judges did their job. And the winners are:

Meeting Tonight, Wednesday, May 3, 2017 7:00 p.m.

The monthly meeting of the Berrien Springs Camera Club will take place on Wednesday, May 3, 1t 7:00 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Public Library meeting room at 215 W. Union Street in Berrien Springs. This month will be the final judging of 2016-2017 accepted/honors photos. It promises to be an excellent overview of what the BSCC members can create.

Expand your interest, test your skills in competition with others, learn about composition and have fun with your hobby, attend interesting programs by experienced photographers, join us this Wednesday.

April 2017 Last Competition

Berrien Springs Camera Club held its last competition for the year. As always, the meeting included some beautiful photos, with topics from angles to wild life. Our judges, Joni King, Ruth Steinhagen and Sandy Hanson, did a great job of judging 81 photos. They were willing to stay afterwards and give critiques for a few of the photos. Pranay Gaikwad, 269 Photography, also helped critique and demonstrate a few tips on editing with Lightroom. April 2017 digital of the month was awarded to Suzanne McDonough's Golden Boy. Thanks to Leroy Patterson and the McDonoughs for snacks. 

See you next month, May 3, for our End of the Year Final Competition. We'll be judging all the acceptable photos from the 2016-2017 BSCC season.

BSCC met Wednesday for a motivating presentation by Greg Constantine. His presentation titled Standing Still had an interesting premise that black and white photography can be more intense, keeping the viewer engaged. Black and white photography removes all distractions, so the strength of the composition shines through. Ordinary subjects can be made extraordinary when one learns to look for texture, shape, patterns, and light. Greg suggests standing still long enough to see a great photo come into view, wait for the cloud to move into position, a person walking into an interesting view, the boat aligning with the moon. A good discussion about what makes a photo work followed Greg's presentation.

February Competition Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Berrien Springs Camera Club will take place on Wednesday, February 1, at 7 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Public Library at 215 W. Union Street in Berrien Springs. This month’s program consists of a competition of prints and projected digital images submitted by members.

The selected topics for the month are:  
Precipitation (Precip) · The object that is the focus of attention in the image must be some type of Precipitation. · Ex. Be on the lookout for objects around you that show precipitation such as the results of rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground. Knowing that different atmospheric conditions are responsible for the different forms of precipitation, you have many opportunities to “participate in precipitation. Try to be unique and different, perhaps out of the ordinary. Puddles, rain drops, fog, rain, condensation, etc · File naming: Precip_PhotoTitle_Name.jpg

Moonlight (Moon) · The object that is the focus of attention in the image must show moonlight. · Ex. Moonlight lighting up a night scene, moon shadows, silhouettes by moonlight, etc. In this case, moonlight DOES NOT mean earning money by working a second job. · File Naming: Moon_PhotoTitle_Name.jpg  
Two additional topics are acceptable for any of the competitions: 1) Nature (showing nothing of human origin or domesticated) and 2) Open (anything goes).  Prints, at least 5" x 7" in size, should be mounted; digital images must be submitted four days in advance, following instructions on the club’s blog: http://berrienspringscameraclub.blogspot.com/ or Facebook page: Berrien Springs Camera Club

January 2017

Happy New Year!

The monthly meeting of the Berrien Springs Camera Club will take place on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at 7 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Public Library at 215 W. Union Street in Berrien Springs.

The first meeting of 2017 will be a troubleshooting workshop. Hit a glitch with your laptop, want to learn about straightening, cropping, resizing, or some basic commands on Photoshop or Elements, bring your laptops and your questions and someone will try to help you solve your dilemma. Tom and Ted will present some basic tutorials. Tim, our Mac expert will be available for specific questions about your Mac.

 Expand your interest in photography, learn to take better photos, meet with others who have the same interest, test your skills in competition with others, learn about composition and have fun with your hobby, attend interesting programs by experienced photographers, join us for our first meeting in 2017 on the first Wednesday of the month. Refreshments will be served.

December 7, 2016 Competition

The monthly meeting of the Berrien Springs Camera Club will take place on Wednesday, December 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Community Librrary at 215 W. Union Street in Berrien Springs. This month's program consists of a competition of prints and projected digital images submitted by members.

The monthly meeting of the Berrien Springs Camera Club will take place on Wednesday, November 2, at 7 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Public Library at 215 W. Union Street in Berrien Springs. Tom McDonough and Ted Post are going to present a photography blog-about.  It will include where to go, what to take and what and how to photograph your subject in an interesting and creative way. It will surely be very informative

and entertaining.

Each month we include a show-and-tell, if you have an idea, technique or something else, count on sharing with other members at our meetings.

Also we have been asked by Andrews University Library to present our best photographs, either framed or mounted on foam core. So bring in your favorites for display in January.

BSCC New Season Begins Sept. 7:00 pm

The Berrien Springs Camera Club will open its new season on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Community Library at Cass and Union. The club’s season runs from September through June each year, with programs alternating between an informative presentation about some aspect of photography, and a competition open to members. If you'd like to get a feel for what our camera club is like, this is the meeting to attend.

 The September meeting will be about improving our club, clarifying policies governing the club’s competitions, and improving our photography skills. Our President, Leroy Patterson, will lead the meeting and discuss BSCC improvements..Tom McDonough will review select topics, competition procedures and update members on a few changes.

Members are also invited to submit up to three digital images, taken this summer, for projection and critique. The critiquing will be a group activity by the other members, nonjudgmental but' thinking out' loud how each picture might be improved. We will view as many as time allows. Anyone who plans to join the club that evening may submit their three images, in jpg format not larger than 1024 x 768, the naming convention for the three digitals should be (please note this is different than the usual competition format)

1_title_yourname, 2_title_yourname, 3_title_yourname  (first initial and last name)

In competition months members can submit up to 10 digitally projected images and up to 10 prints (mounted, at least 5" x 7") for judging. Awards are given for the top projected images and mounted prints. Acceptable topics always include Nature (nothing domesticated or showing evidence of mankind), Portraits, and Open (anything), plus two special topics each month. The special topics for each competition month this year are:

                Oct. 5: Rivers and Clouds

                Dec. 7: Churches and Stained Glass (sg)

                Feb. 1: Precipitation (precip) and Moonlight (moon)

                Apr. 5: Wild Animals and Angles

The May 3 meeting is for final judging of the year's acceptances, when 3 judges will select the top 10 projected images and prints of the year, and the June 7 end-of-season meeting will include a potluck meal at 6:30 and a show from the year's acceptances.

The public is welcome to attend and enjoy the competitions. To submit pictures, one must be a member. Other activities are being planned for members, such as outings, exhibits, and publication. Annual membership fees are $10 for students, $25 for other individuals, and $35 per family. Refreshments are served at each meeting.

June 1, 2016 Potluck at 6:30

The Berrien Springs Camera Club will hold its final monthly meeting of the 2015-2016 season on Wednesday, June 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Public Library at Cass (Old 31) and Union in Berrien Springs. Meeting a half-hour earlier than usual this session begins with a potluck meal and features a Power Point show made up of all the prints and digital images that were accepted and/or honored by judges in the four competitions throughout the year.

Competition topics for this year have included: Water, What Is It?, 25+ Years of Age, Macro, Motion, Alphabet, Bridges and Mechanics and Industry as well as the standard Nature and Open. Thus a wide variety will be represented in the final show. Awards will be given out for top honors during the year.

Anyone is welcome. Bring a dish to share, make some new friends, enjoy the images taken from around the world, and consider joining next year.

February's Competition Meeting

Get ready for February's Competition Meeting, this Wednesday, February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at the Berrien Springs Community Library. The February Select topics are: Alphabet (alpha)
The object that is the focus of attention in the image must be predominantly one letter of the alphabet
-Ex. Unacceptable images can not have printed or a hand written letter. Be on the lookout for objects in nature that naturally form letter, a letter 'V' from the fin of a fish, a vine shaped like the letter 'S', or manmade objects like a short building next to a tall building that form the letter 'L'.
-File naming:  Alpha_Title_Name.jpg.
Motion (motion)
The object that is the focus of attention in the image must evoke a feeling or state of motion.
-Ex: A cat chasing a mouse with the background blurred, a child swinging,

For our January meeting we offer Kudos to Ted Post for providing videos, produced by Steven Arnold, to help members enhance their photos for display or competition.  What was apparent from these lessons was Photoshop, along with a knowledgeable human with their hands on the keyboard, can create some amazing photos. We know your secrets now, Ted, better watch out for enhanced competition in February! Many thanks for your continued involvement in BSCC. Your support is much appreciated!    

December's Photo Competition

Just a reminder, the monthly meeting of the Berrien Springs Camera Club will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Public Library at Cass (Old 31) and Union in Berrien Springs. This month’s program consists of a competition of prints and projected digital images submitted by members.

The selected topics for the month are 1) Macro and 2) 25+. Macro would include extreme close-ups, approximately life-size. The 25+ allows members to get creative in thinking of any subjects that are 25 years old or older. This could include people, rocks, mountains, old cars, and much more.

Two additional topics are acceptable for any of the competitions: 1) Nature (showing nothing of human origin or domesticated) and 2) Open (anything else). The acceptances will receive slightly fewer points than will the selected topics.

Prints, at least 5" x 7" in size, should be mounted; digital images must be submitted four days in advance, following instructions on the club’s blog:  http://berrienspringscameraclub.blogspot.com/

All are welcome, either to observe or to join. Anyone planning to join may submit images for the competition according to the blog instructions. Refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there.

November's Meeting Photo Matting

Don't forget, the monthly meeting of the Berrien Springs Camera Club will be on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at its usual venue, the Berrien Springs Community Library at Cass and Union. Long-time club members Tom and Suzanne McDonough will present a workshop on matting photos. She asks attendees to bring a sharp pencil, a ruler with centimeter/millimeters marked, and an 8"x10" or smaller photo (not borderless) to matte. Also, if any have questions about their photo enhancer, they can bring along a laptop, and seasoned members will be there to assist in getting the best from their photos

All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

 

You will need a sharp pencil, centimeter ruler, a photo with a border, and an open mind for understanding the metric system.
